A new native development kit for the Android platform has been released by Google, raising hopes that better 3D gaming could be brought to mobile application development.
The release features the OpenGL ES 2.0 standard, which is already used for development on the iPhone platform.
It will bring the "ability to control graphics rendering through vertex and fragment shader programs", although only for Android 2.0 or higher.
This latest release will be interesting news to developers and businesses looking to take their next step in the mobile application sector and it could lead to more products being added to the thousands already available on Android Market.
It is also good news for consumers who want to experience 3D gaming on their mobile phone, something which is already available on the iPhone and iPod Touch.
According to Google chief Eric Schmidt, 60,000 Android handsets are now being sold every day around the world.
