New research has shown that poor web design could lead to increased stress among visitors.
The study by Computer Associates (CA) showed that consumers have to concentrate 50 per cent more on badly performing websites, increasing stress levels.
Researchers used brain wave analysis to look at consumer behaviour and buying habits, also taking into account facial muscle and behavioural analysis of the subjects.
Meanwhile, on ecommerce websites, online sales cycle search and checkout were the most stressful points.
Kobi Korsah, director of product marketing at CA for Europe, Middle East and Africa, said: "The results of this study sends out a clear message - businesses need to reduce 'web stress' and improve the online experience of their customers if they're going to maximise returns from their web channel."
In addition to web design, factors such as connection speeds and applications supporting websites also affected the performance.
An added consideration for web developers in recent years has been ensuring that websites can be used effectively from mobile devices.
Melt du Plooy, head of the search marketing division at Virtuosa, recently recommended that sites need to be "completely usable for all types of mobile visitors".
