Twitter has transferred it data management from MySQL to Cassandra, it has been revealed.
The microblogging service joins Digg and Facebook among the popular websites to have already made the transition.
In an interview with MyNoSQL, Ryan King, an engineer at Twitter, explained how MySql was become "prohibitively costly".
He added: "We have a lot of data, the growth factor in that data is huge and the rate of growth is accelerating.
"We need a system that can grow in a more automated fashion and be highly available."
An advantage to Cassandra is that it is highly scalable and flexible, making it suitable for websites with high volumes of data like Facebook and Twitter.
Sun Microsystems, which owns MySQL, was recently taken over by IT giant Oracle, sparking concerns among some about the future of the open source data management system.
Despite the moves of Facebook and Twitter, companies such as Yahoo, Google and Nokia are still among the users of MySQL.
