Web design must be more than just about testing

5th March 2010

A marketing expert has said that owners of websites need to look beyond just testing and analytical data when it comes to web design.

Writing for ComMetrics, Urs Gattiker says that, while A/B testing can be useful to find out what could work well on a website, it does not necessarily give any indication of what is wrong.

Instead, he recommended that, alongside testing, website owners or designers talk to potential clients to find out exactly what could be done better.

He also comes up with the "30 per cent rule", meaning something should be done if this many people suggest it.

A/B testing is often used by websites to refine their web design and find out if a news feature will work well.

Recent examples of it being used successfully include EyeBuyDirect.com, which used it to prove that merchant seals would be a good addition to the website, and MerchantCircle, which improved its conversion rate by changing the layout.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19654458-ADNFCR
