Expert advises on best mobile web design practices

2nd March 2010

An online marketing expert has given advice on how best to optimize website design for the mobile internet.

The popularity of smartphones means that businesses increasingly have to think about how their websites will work on small portable devices using the Android platform or other operating systems.

Writing for Bizcommunity.com, Melt du Plooy, head of the search marketing division at Virtuosa, an online marketing agency, sums up her advice when she says that developers must "make sure that the site is completely usable for all types of mobile visitors".

Despite ever-increasing speeds, mobile web pages still need to be as lightweight as possible, allowing for faster loading times.

Another practice that is possible is user agent detection, meaning the website takes into account what device is browsing it and adjusts accordingly. With the proliferation of different handsets and browsers, this is crucial.

One important piece of advice in terms of search engine optimisation is that websites may need to include more localised information as mobile users may be searching for something that is near them.

Research by Gartner recently showed that the Android is the fastest growing mobile platform, with its market share expanding from 0.5 per cent in 2008 to 3.9 per cent in 2009.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19646619-ADNFCR
