Businesses based in the north-east of England are finding that web design is more important than ever before, the Journal has reported.
The newspaper emphasised that businesses in the region need to keep up with the fast-paced growth of online marketing.
It noted that while for many start-ups, the first step used to be setting up office in a premium part of town, the same principle now applies to the web instead.
The paper commented: "If you were to set up a shop front and money was no object, most people would choose to have their window on Northumberland Street, the busiest street in town, not hidden on a side street!"
It added that search engines can therefore be regarded as the Northumberland Street of the internet - and websites should therefore be designed in such a way to make them stand out among the competition.
This involves focusing the site on the specific product or service the company provides, rather than simply who they are - as this information is likely to be more relevant to searchers.
Monitoring firm Gomez recently carried out a survey among online shoppers which indicated that consumers are also concerned about loading time speeds and webpage errors - two things web designers may wish to keep a close eye on to provide a better customer experience.
