Anyone involved in bespoke website design may be interested to know about the impact changing registration fields can have.
Writing on his personal website, Luke Wroblewski, chief design architect at Yahoo! Inc, has looked into the practice of presenting registration forms in a narrative style.
This would mean that instead of a field just asking for an address, and then another for a phone number, it would go: " I live at [my street address] in the [ZIP] area" and "Please call me back on [my phone number] at you earliest convenience."
Vast.com, a website offering a variety of services including travel and motoring, changed its registration form into one that used a prose style.
After running tests, it found that the practice led to an increase in conversion rates of between 25 and 40 per cent.
Wroblewski points out that a number of other websites have implemented such fields including audio sharing sire Huffduffer.
Another consideration with registration is not to ask for too much information, according to Steve Lomax from CheetahMail.
He said that collecting personal information slowly can help build up a better relationship with the customer.
