Report shows pace of mobile application development on Android

26th February 2010

A study by a application retail analyst company has shown that Android Market is the fastest growing application store out of all the mobile platforms.

The research, carried out by Distimo and released at the recent Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, says that it experienced 15 per cent growth in the last month, bringing the total number of applications to just under 20,000.

Although still short of the 151,000 that Apple has for its iPhone, it does show how quickly the platform has gained a slice of the market.

Other interesting statistics that come from the research include the fact that Android has the highest proportion of free applications with 57 per cent available at no cost.

The news comes in the wake of Google chief executive Eric Schmidt's announcement that 60,000 Android handsets are being sold every day around the world.

It also comes soon after a separate study showed that Android users spend an average of 87 minutes per day using their applications.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19641236-ADNFCR
