Those involved in the process of ecommerce website design should take care to adhere to web standards that make pages display in the same way across different types of browsers and computers, according to a writer.
Armando Roggio of Practical Ecommerce commented that while in the early 1990s, web developers frequently had to set up a different web page for each type of browser or platform, this is now no longer the case.
By setting up sites in standard-compliant code, web merchants can expect their sites to "behave in a generally similar way regardless of whether [they are] using a PC or an Apple Mac; Internet Explorer or Firefox; or a laptop or mobile phone".
Mr Roggio added that one good way to check this is to ensure the site is working in a minimum of three different web browsers - he suggested Mozilla Firefox, Chrome and Internet Explorer - to ensure everything looks consistent.
Bryan Glick, editor-in-chief of Computer Weekly magazine recently commented that new European Commission rules - which would allow Windows users to opt to use browsers other than Internet Explorer if they so choose - could have an influence on bespoke website design and maintenance.
