Anyone looking at mobile application development will be interested to know about the surge in sales of Android phones in 2009.
Research firm Gartner's latest figures show how Google's Android platform has been one of the main beneficiaries of the growth in the smartphone market.
The number of phones loaded with the Android operating system grew from 640,500 in 2008 to 6.8 million in 2009, taking its market share from 0.5 per cent to 3.9 per cent.
By comparison, Symbian saw its market share fall from 46.9 per cent to 52.4 per cent while Linux also registered a drop.
Roberta Cozza, principal research analyst at Gartner, said: "Android's success experienced in the fourth quarter of 2009 should continue into 2010 as more manufacturers launch Android products."
The growth of the Android platform has come about because of the number of handset manufacturers that have adopted the operating system. Among the companies using it are Microsoft, Sony Ericsson and Motorola.
It is attractive to developers because it is open source while consumers are able to access thousands of applications through it.
