Bespoke website design can still help e-retailers despite seasonal downturn

22nd February 2010

The UK online retail sector is set to remain strong, despite suffering a slow start to the new decade, it has been claimed.

According to the latest figures published by the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG), online sales grew by just five per cent in January in comparison to the same month of 2009.

This figure represents the slowest monthly rate of growth seen in the e-commerce sector for around a decade, however, analysts have been quick to point out that, as well as the traditional slow start to the year, this January, online retailers were also hit by a number of issues even the most savvy website development couldn't overcome.

"Less retailer discounting due to well planned stock levels and the increase in VAT equally appear to have had an impact on the online retail sector during January," explained Tina Spooner, director of information at IMRG.

At the same time, however, John Lewis was among those retailers reporting a strong rise in online sales at the start of the year, in much the same way that Endsleigh Insurance has reported a 36 per cent increase in web traffic following on from the recent completion of its bespoke website design project.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19629869-ADNFCR
