Businesses may soon have to tweak their website design so as to take advantage of the expected increase in the use of web browsers other than Internet Explorer.
While many small businesses currently gear their website development towards its use in the popular Microsoft browser, a new ruling by the European Commission, stating that the software giant will have to offer users a choice of applications, is likely to have a significant impact upon this.
According to Bryan Glick, editor-in-chief of Computer Weekly magazine, enabling users of Windows to choose which browser they wish to use to browse the internet is likely to lead to many people turning away from Internet Explorer and to its rivals, with this likely to affect website design and maintenance.
"Among home computer users it's inevitably going to have an affect because home computer users don't really care what browser they use; they just use whatever's on the PC," he explained.
"Now they are going to be forced to make a choice and inevitably some of them are going to look at other options and choose one of the other ones that have been presented to them."
According to Microsoft's own blog, published in response to the EC ruling, it will now offer a Web browser choice screen to users across Europe, with this to be in place for the next five years.
