Google has claimed that 60,000 Android handsets are being sold every day, a point of interest for anyone thinking about mobile application development.
Speaking at the Mobile World Congress, Eric Schmidt, chief executive of Google, revealed the figure, which would equate to around 22 million a year.
The Android platform has quickly gained a large number of users because many handset manufacturers have adopted it for their devices.
Among the companies selling smartphones with Android are HTC, Sony Ericsson and Motorola, with all of them able to tap into Android Market for applications.
The Mobile World Congress event has seen a number of new handsets announced, and there has been much optimism for the future of the mobile industry.
In his speech, Eric Schmidt spoke about the 'mobile first' rule as he now considers development for the mobile market now more important than desktop.
He added that web developers within Google and elsewhere were keen to "work on mobile first".
