The potential release of Opera to the iPhone could speed up internet access from the device, if the company is to be believed.
Showing off the browser at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Opera claimed that it is six times faster than the Safari browser that comes bundled with all versions of the iPhone.
However, an important stumbling block is that the application has not yet been approved by Apple itself, something it may be reluctant to do as it could undermine Safari.
Opera Mini is already available on a number of other mobile platforms, including Android, using compression technology to drastically speed up loading times.
Mini recently crossed the 50 million barrier in terms of the amount of unique monthly users, with the last 10 million coming in the three months up to January.
Lars Boilesen, chief executive officer of Opera, said: "Opera's innovative nature and its popularity among users will help us make the mobile Web even more accessible and attractive to more people across the world."
