Sony Ericsson releases new Android handsets to spur mobile application development

15th February 2010

Sony Ericsson has unveiled two new Android handsets as the operating system continues to gain users.

The Xperia X10 mini and mini pro are compact versions of the previously-released Xperia 10, and both feature slide-out QWERTY keyboards.

The company is particularly keen to stress the availability of a variety of Android applications for the phone, and among the services that come preinstalled are Google Talk and YouTube.

Rikko Sakaguchi, chief creation officer at Sony Ericsson, said: "We have pushed the boundaries of what is possible with smaller devices and are giving consumers exactly what they want; two high performance mobile phones with a fully customisable user experience platform and a stunning ultra-compact design."

Since its introduction in 2008, Android has been adopted by a number of manufacturers, including Motorola and HTC, as well as Google itself with the recent Nexus One device.

It is an open platform operating system, meaning developers are free to adapt it to different devices, while web designers can create a variety of applications for it.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19616845-ADNFCR
