Microsoft has launched its latest operating system for the mobile phone market, opening up the way for further mobile application development.
Windows Phone 7 series will be released on handsets by the end of 2010, and such has been the overhaul in the design that the company sees it almost as a new entry into the market.
Announcing the new operating system, Andy Lees, senior vice president of Microsofts Mobile Communications Business, said: "The technological advances over the past few years enable us to do bold new things weve never done before.
"But the most important thing is that we are bringing it all together with an almost maniacal focus on the consumer."
At the heart of the new operating system is a tile layout, while it incorporates services such as Xbox Live games and the Zune music service.
Windows Phone 7 Series will now be competing with the likes of Apple and RIM in the smartphone market, as well as Google's open source Android platform, all operating systems that it has lost market share to over the past few years.
