Smartphones are driving forward web development by opening up new avenues for communicating with mobile internet users, it has been claimed.
Matt McNeil, founder of email marketing solutions provider Sign-Up.to, explains that smartphones are allowing more web users to "interact outside of the desktop".
"We've definitely seen the market accelerate over the last 12 months," he adds.
Mr McNeil notes the unique opportunities presented by mobile internet access when it is incorporated into web development.
For instance, by detecting the individual's geographical location, it can be possible to serve content that is highly relevant to their situation at the time.
Mr McNeil describes this as basing the messages delivered not only on what the user is accessing, but also where and when they are visiting the site.
His comments follow the publication of research by the Internet Advertising Bureau that shows how brand awareness can be enhanced further by the combination of mobile and online advertising than by the use of either technique alone.
