Website design 'should target universal search'

Catering for different kinds of content in website design can help a site to perform better in universal search results, according to Ron Jones of Search Engine Watch.

Some of the more direct elements of website design that can help pages to perform well involve labelling multimedia content effectively.

For instance, Mr Jones recommends ensuring that videos embedded on pages are tagged with SEO-friendly categories, as well as being reproduced on social media sites such as YouTube to increase their exposure further.

Images are arguably easier to optimise, as they come with the alt attribute that allows a keyword-heavy caption to be added that most users will not necessarily see.

Meanwhile, e-commerce sites with goods for sale can use some off-site optimisation techniques through the Google Base service.

Accessed via Google's dedicated Merchant Center page, this allows online retailers to provide further information about their products to ensure that they rank well in related searches on Google's shopping engine.ADNFCR-2036-ID-19603445-ADNFCR
