Website creation will increasingly incorporate social media platforms as their primary way of communicating with customers, it has been predicted.
Online analyst Gartner said that by 2014, 20 per cent of firms will use links to social networking sites as their key communication medium thanks to the popularity of Twitter and Facebook.
Microblogging will also make an appearance on the websites of many companies in the future, the study found, with more than half expected to be investing in short, regular updates in a few years' time.
Matt Cain, research vice-president at Gartner, said: "While email is already almost fully penetrated in the corporate space, we expect to see steep growth rates for sales of premises and cloud-based social networking services."
Business product designer NEBS recently claimed that the use of social media on e-commerce platforms looks set to develop and expand rapidly over the year, as it can lead to an increase in conversions.
