Those hoping to make the most of e-commerce website design need to attract visitors in much the same way as brick and mortar stores.
According to Peter Crisafi, vice-president of New York website design firm dzine it, first impressions are very important in maintaining consumers' interest in an online store.
"There's no doubt that a conventional retail establishment that is poorly merchandised, cluttered, or messy is a turn-off for many shoppers. An online store can be just as much of a mess and that can hinder potential online sales," Crisafi said.
He recommended that retailers use a professional website design, remove any unnecessary clutter from their sites, refrain from using too many Flash and animation techniques and make sure it is easy to navigate.
Jennifer Marsh recently wrote for Suite101 that good quality content can also aid search engine optimisation, which will boost rankings of online stores on sites such as Google.
