Mobile applications development: More cloud-based apps 'coming'

29th January 2010

By Alex Ball

Development of cloud-based mobile applications would be "natural", according to an expert.

Steve Reynolds, who chairs the Mobile Data Association, gave his views after a study by Juniper Research showed that such apps are expected to increase.

According to Mr Reynolds, the mobile sector is in a good position to handle cloud-based services.

He noted the potential within the enterprise mobility industry, which already has a strong presence of hosted applications.

The expert explained that such applications would bring a great deal of flexibility to businesses.

"It's a natural progression to migrate to cloud computing," he concluded.

Juniper Research's data indicates that cloud-based mobile applications will hit almost $9.5 billion (£5.85 billion) by the year 2014.

Enterprise applications are expected to form the bulk of the market over the five coming years.

Research by Symantec, however, shows that some firms are not focusing on cloud computing for this year.

Private cloud computing was deemed a major priority for 57 per cent of firms that were polled, while public cloud computing made the list for 53 per cent.
