Bespoke web designers 'can look out for social media advertising'

Owners of tailor made websites have been told to watch how advertising develops on social media.

Guy Phillipson, chief executive of the Internet Advertising Bureau, pointed out that social media gives advertisers an insight into what people do during the day and what interests them.

He predicted that microblogging website Twitter will eventually carry advertisements as well.

"That will add to the brand story and therefore the revenue that will continue to grow online," Mr Phillipson commented.

In his view, it is "inescapable" that advertisers will take advantage of social media websites as people spend so much time on them now.

The Nielsen Company recently announced that it has released a service to allow British firms to use Facebook to assess how well they are performing with their online branding.

According to its data, 10.2 per cent of display ad views in 2009 were from Facebook, showing a 6.4 per cent increase on 2008's figure.
