Firms that are smaller in size should use well-established websites as their basis for designing their own sites.

Real Business spoke to internet marketing expert Will Critchlow about internet trends for this year and how companies can be sure to capitalise on them.

Mr Critchlow explained that consumers generally know how to use sites such as Facebook and Amazon and suggested that small firms take their inspiration from them.

"As a general rule, small businesses should look at the successful online businesses as a template for how to do things," he said.

He suggested keeping bespoke web design fairly simple and making the best use of images, as generic stock pictures are less compelling for viewers.

Previously, Mr Critchlow has also told Real Business about the importance of analytics tools.

He explained that they give information such as how visitors found the site and what their behaviour was once they arrived.

This data can be used to try to improve conversion rates.
