Linux is a real rival for the new iPad from Apple, according to an industry writer.
Steven J Vaughan-Nichols used a Computerworld blog post to express his belief that more Linux-powered devices will be released later this year in response to the iPad.
"I foresee a roll-out of dozens of Linux-powered devices by the end of the year," he wrote.
Mr Vaughan-Nichols was doubtful that the iPad has any real advantages over Linux and also noted that the latter would cost less.
He believes that the first slew of rivals with the iPad will use Moblin 2.0, on which there are five Linux vendors working.
Additionally, the analyst predicted that Google's Linux-powered Chrome system will also prove to be serious competition.
The iPad has a number of features such as a multi-touch screen, a photographs application and a high-resolution display for video.
Its YouTube application lets users organise their videos, while there is also a capacity for high-resolution satellite view images of streets with the maps function.
