Social media 'will not replace bespoke websites'

Bespoke websites are still necessary even with the rise of social media, according to a commentator.

Eric Enge used a Search Engine Watch article to refute claims that search engine optimisation (SEO) is losing its power.

Though some people have said social media will eliminate the purpose of SEO, Mr Enge argued that different sections of society use Web 2.0 and it does not cover everyone equally.

He also pointed out that social media offers opinions, few authoritative statements and is subject to spam.

Mr Enge added that SEO is not about gaming search engines to provide irrelevant results, which he called a common misconception.

Search engines have an interest in keeping their results relevant in order not to lose their business from searchers, he explained.

Firms have been advised, however, to use social media for their marketing efforts.

Expert Lawrence Petty said that it helps to define clear goals before developing a social media strategy.
