Mid-market smartphones could become more advanced this year, an expert has said.
Conrad Longmore, who edits Mobile Gazette, accepted that it can be difficult to make forecasts about the smartphone sector because there is no absolute definition of what constitutes such a device.
He added, however, that the Bada platform from Samsung is expected to prompt some development within the market, as it can bring smartphone features to mid-range items.
Mr Longmore also predicted a fourth-generation iPhone to be released at some point throughout the year.
He said that a lot of people in the upper range of the market will want to replace their existing smartphones with newer ones.
Recent research from Futuresource Consulting has predicted that in 2013, over a billion people will be smartphone owners.
Smartphone sales are increasing even though handsets in general are experiencing an overall fall.
Gartner has found that smartphones will represent 38 per cent of all mobile device sales by 2013.
