Businesses looking to improve their search engine optimisation (SEO) performance have been encouraged to look at the tactics used by their rivals.
Jill Kocher used a Practical Ecommerce article to suggest that firms use the Google Keyword tool to work out what the trends are regarding keywords and identify who their main competitors are.
They can then study the keywords' use within the content on these websites and also the backlinks provided to understand how it is that they are being outperformed.
Ms Kocher observed that while it is simple to make changes with keyword optimisation, links are often proved to be more effective.
Further keyword advice for bespoke websites was recently given by SEOmoz's Rand Fishkin.
He recommended grouping them together by broad association - for example, linking terms such as 'batman' and 'superman' with 'comics' or 'graphic novel'.
They should also be classified with consideration given to the intentions of the users, such as whether they want to buy a subscription or a recent book.
Visitors can then be targeted more specifically and the chances of successful conversions are higher.
