Bespoke website design 'should consider SEO from the start'

19th January 2010

Websites should not be made first with consideration for search engine optimisation (SEO) added on later, a professional has said.

In an article for iMediaConnection, Ian Hughes stressed the need for keeping SEO a priority from the very beginning when launching a website.

"All told, it's much easier to build solid SEO into your site's foundation before you launch," he wrote.

He explained that redesigning becomes harder the more time a website is set live and could end up taking more time and money to carry out.

URLs are also often changed when a website is revamped, which can have an effect on link equity.

Furthermore, website domains are often low in search rankings when they are new.

If they are poorly optimised, this will compound the problem.

Mr Hughes recommended researching keywords thoroughly and grouping them together according to their themes.

SEO Consult, however, recently warned against stuffing too many keywords into a webpage for optimisation purposes.

Overuse of search terms or links could prompt a search engine to define the page as spam.
