Businesses can benefit from social media but may suffer if employees spend too long using it.
This is the finding of a study by California-based Robert Half Technology.
According to its research, companies are increasingly turning to the use of social media, which can be beneficial to firms that have bespoke websites.
But 54 per cent of the 1,400 enterprises questioned do not allow workers to access social networking sites during office hours.
The San Francisco Examiner reported comments from David Knapp, regional vice president for Robert Half.
He noted that social media has been useful for companies to engage with customers or launch new goods, but also pointed out that employees may use such platforms to release comments or information that is detrimental to business.
Robert Half has also found recently that 43 per cent of chief information officers believe their IT departments to be understaffed in relation to the workloads they bear.
