Are bespoke websites changing language?

31st December 2009

Words relating to social networking were on the rise in the past year.

This is according to Countdown personality Susie Dent.

She analysed the two-billion word database that comprises the Oxford English Corpus to discover that terms including "tweetup", referring to microblogging website Twitter, were standing out.

Another trend was for the word "defriend", meaning to remove a contact from social networking website Facebook.

The power of social media was also manifest through the use of the word "simples", referring to the comparethemarket.com advertising drive, which has a presence on Facebook and YouTube as well as television adverts.

While citing "staycation" as the top word of the year, Ms Dent added: "Tweet (and the huge Twitter lexicon that has emerged, including the twitterati, Twitterverse and tweet-ups) is another strong candidate."

Last week, Mikal E Belicove used an Entrepreneur article to suggest using feed strategies when combining social media with bespoke websites.

He explained that this would prevent having to make numerous uploads as the content would be automatically sent out to all platforms.
