Mobile applications development: Smartphones 'unlikely to replace PCs'

24th December 2009

Smartphones are not likely to replace PCs in terms of popularity and use, an industry professional has said.

Rosemary Hattersley, associate editor of PC Advisor, noted that the market is seeing the greatest growth with products such as Google's Nexus One and the iPhone.

But she added: "Whether they will supersede the desktop PC, though, is quite unlikely."

Ms Hattersley cited good deals from providers as a reason why mobile computing is on the rise.

According to her, PCs owe their popularity to the success of Windows 7, which enjoyed great anticipation and a very positive reception.

Recent research from mobile messaging firm Airwide Solutions found that mobile broadband is considered to be the second best innovation in technology since the turn of the century.

Some 35 per cent of respondents cited it as a top choice.

It was beaten only by GPS-enabled navigation devices, which scooped 44 per cent of the votes.

The iPhone came in third with 32 per cent.
