Bespoke web design 'needs to include content off-site'

23rd December 2009

Online marketers can no longer focus solely on their bespoke websites, according to an expert.

Writing for Forbes, Laurie Burkitt explained that the growth of social media means that "the web will not remain as destination-oriented as it is now".

She explained that marketers will have to work on creating content that is not hosted on their own websites, adding that Google and Yahoo! are "social media companies" as well as search engines.

"Geo-targeted marketing will be huge," she predicted, pointing out that mobile internet use and Google's ownership of AdMob would enable marketers to target their promotions more specifically.

Ms Burkitt compiled a "watch list" of social media platforms, including Google.

She noted that if Google Wave and Gmail integrate, the two could form a major social media entity.

Anne Wallace recently reported for the Associated Press that social media is even changing people's travel habits as they can be easily put in contact with others who live in the area they are visiting or can offer information and recommendations for it.
