Internet Explorer 'may lose dominance'

22nd December 2009

Internet trends could be in for a change after a decision by the European Commission (EC) regarding browsers.

Microsoft product Internet Explorer is a leader in the market currently, but the EC has taken on an offer from the computer firm to give Windows users in Europe choice of different browsers.

Bryan Glick, who edits Computer Weekly, predicted that Internet Explorer would retain its top spot for some time and pointed out that most people who use home PCs are unlikely to be familiar with alternatives such as Firefox and Chrome.

But he noted that Google has been promoting Chrome quite prominently and that people may become more aware of their other options.

The EC's decision comes as it was concerned that Microsoft may have been in breach of European Union rules regarding responsibility for market leaders.

Microsoft will now have a Choice Screen displayed for five years in its update function within the European Economic Area to help people to install web browsers other than Internet Explorer.
