Mobile applications development: BlackBerry's popularity 'has gone to consumer world'

21st December 2009

BlackBerrys have gained a strong hold among consumers because they performed well in the business sector, according to an expert.

James Atkinson, editor of Mobile magazine, was speaking after BlackBerry maker Research in Motion (RIM), said that record sales have been made for the smart mobile device.

RIM reported that 4.4 million new BlackBerry subscriber accounts were set up in the last quarter and also revealed that its income had increased by 59 per cent to hit £389 million after ten million sales.

Mr Atkinson observed: "They (BlackBerrys) had a good reputation in the business world and that has filtered through to the consumer world."

He also noted that the attractive appearance of the BlackBerry has contributed to its fashion appeal.

Most (80 per cent) of new BlackBerry subscribers were non-corporate customers, RIM revealed.

Data from Gartner shows that across the world, there were 308.9 million mobile phone unit sales in the third quarter of this year.
