Companies 'lose millions a year from web surfing'

21st December 2009

Businesses are losing millions of pounds a year because employees waste time playing on the internet when they should be working.

This is according to a new study by Winmonkey.co.uk, which calculated that £624 million worth of hours are lost in total every year.

Its survey showed that 87 per cent surf the internet regularly during office hours.

On average, employees spend six hours a week using the internet for personal purposes while they are at work.

While a significant minority (43 per cent) of bosses ignore the issue, 23 per cent have taken disciplinary action and seven per cent have fired staff who repeatedly committed the offence.

The most common ways of wasting time on the internet in the office are using Facebook, shopping, talking to people through instant messaging, watching videos on YouTube and playing on competition and bingo websites.

In related internet trends news, Ben Camm-Jones of Web User recently stated that it is too late for websites to begin charging people to access online news.
