Internet trends: 'It's too late to charge for online news'

18th December 2009

News websites cannot begin charging people to access content, according to a professional.

Ben Camm-Jones, who edits news for Web User, said that people have come to expect to get this sort of content for free, since it has been like that for over ten years.

He was responding to the news that a £2.39 mobile application has been released that enables people to look at recent content from the Guardian newspaper.

BBC writer Bill Thompson claimed that the Guardian should try to get users to pay for the access, but Mr Camm-Jones believes that it is too late to charge.

He observed that the only publications which can do this are niche ones, explaining that users will not pay for content that is not unique enough and will simply go to free sources.

The mobile app for the Guardian was made by 2ergo and is designed for the Apple iPhone.

It is ad-free for its launch.
