MySQL could bring in real benefits for Oracle if it acquires the product and uses it well.
This is the assertion made by Brian Gentile, chief executive officer of Jaspersoft, a business intelligence vendor.
He told Intelligent Enterprise: "If Oracle manages MySQL cleverly, it could be used as an entry-level database it could use to seed the market more broadly."
Mr Gentile added that, once this has been done, Oracle could use the database management system to compete more strongly with rivals such as Microsoft SQL server."
Should Oracle fail to capitalise on MySQL, Mr Gentile believes that other open source databases would take its place.
But he noted that the delay being forced by the European Commission on whether Oracle can take over MySQL is preventing it from competing properly.
Michael Widenius, one of MySQL's creators, recently used a blog post to express concern about the possibility of Oracle owning the technology, which is used in many bespoke websites.
"I just don't buy it that Oracle will be a good home for MySQL," he said, explaining that it is used by many major firms.
The European Commission is worried that Oracle would have too much control on the database sector if it possesses MySQL.
