The influence of social media played a major role in internet marketing throughout 2009, it has been claimed.
Releasing a list of the top ten biggest social media stories for the year, Ronny Kerr used a Vator News article to demonstrate how "2009 rocked the social web".
His top story was the rapid growth of Twitter, which was registering five tweets a second on January 20th.
In June, it was said to have generated $48 million (£30 million) in the media coverage it had achieved without cost thanks to its fast growth in popularity.
Mobile applications development features in the list too, with the rise of augmented reality appearing at number eight.
Mr Kerr noted how smartphones have been used throughout the year for augmented reality apps such as Aha Mobile, which gives real-time information about traffic, and Gowalla, which informs users about the local area.
John Drachman recently used a Web 2.0 Journal article to explain how social media can be used to help businesses to understand more about their customers.
