A growing number of consumer will be going online to buy Christmas products this year, according to eBay.
In news to interest people who work in bespoke web design, a spokesperson for the auction website explained that internet sellers can give better prices and more choice than bricks-and-mortar stores.
She also noted that consumers believe online retailers give customer service that is at least as good as what they would get if they shopped offline.
According to eBay's Online Business Index, internet companies get almost a fifth of their annual turnover from Christmas sales and 51 per cent are ordering in more goods this year to meet the expected demand.
The spokesperson foresaw a "bumper Christmas for Britain's online retailers".
Of the retailers ordering in more stock, 29 per cent plan to purchase at least 15 per cent more than they did in 2008.
Just 17 per cent think sales will drop this year.
In total, 508 internet companies were polled for the research.
