Mobile applications development is being assisted in part by larger screens on phones, according to an industry figure.
Jonathan Morris, who edits What Mobile magazine, explained that browsing the web on phones has become easier since screens were made larger.
He also pointed out that people are encouraged to stay updated on issues thanks to the growth of social media.
Another factor helping mobile applications development is the data speeds, which Mr Morris noted can enable users to stream rich media such as music or video.
Mr Morris was speaking after the release of a report by Juniper Research which found that mobile augmented reality technology is expected to form a major part of the smartphone industry by 2014.
It expects these sorts of services to be worth $732 (£442) million in that year and to have broken $2 million (£1.2) million next year.
Advertising, services that require subscription and paid-for application downloads will be the cause of revenue for firms.
