Website design needs to be suitable for mobile access, according to a professional.
Social Media Portal co-founder Tim Gibbons said that this would be a "prudent" approach for those creating bespoke websites, whether or not they are driven by social networking.
He noted the rapidly advancing capacities of smartphones, pointing out that they are getting better at accessing the internet and taking photographs, and explained that this makes them increasingly well-suited to social media.
"One word for you - applications," Mr Gibbons said.
The expert stressed the need for web design to take into account not just the fact that mobile applications development is increasing in popularity, but also the fact that such applications are being used socially.
Mr Gibbons was speaking after an AdMob study revealed that half of web-enabled smartphones run off the iPhone operating system, demonstrating Apple's dominance of the sector.
Next comes Nokia's Symbian at 25 per cent, followed by Google's Android with 11 per cent and RIM at seven per cent.
