Social media marketing 'needs strategy'

24th November 2009

Companies need to have a plan of action when they start using social media as part of their web development, an expert has said.

Writing for Search Engine Watch, Liana Evans warned that simply appearing on social networks without optimising the approach would end in confusion and disappointment in the results.

She urged ecommerce firms to identify goals and metrics to assess the effectiveness of the campaign and to outline why they want a presence in social media to begin with.

For example, they may wish to use it for branding or to interact with customers.

In addition, organisations should set dates for when they will review and re-evaluate their social media strategy.

Mikal Caldwell recently stated in a Business Matters column on Tallahassee.com that social media can be very good for a company's interests.

He said that it is not just a passing trend and pointed out that many businesses of all sizes have made significant profits from it.
