Web design needs to incorporate consistent internal links with its URLs, an expert has said.
In an article for ClickZ, Adam Audette stressed that URLs "need to be consistently used in internal linking and navigation".
He also pointed out that the infrastructure of a website needs to be visible to search engine crawlers.
In addition, he noted that HTML links are still best for being identified by search engines and warned that the use of JavaScript could be obstructive to search engine optimisation (SEO).
Mr Audette observed that website design has to have "clear, organised site architecture" to succeed with SEO as it is search engines, rather than humans, that will discover and rank the website.
At the same time, keyword use needs to be fitting to human readers.
Rachel Moran recently used a MediaPost article to stress the importance of good aesthetics in bespoke web design.
She suggested creating two versions of a website, one largely HTML and the other largely Flash, and giving users the option to choose which one they want to use.
Ms Moran agreed that HTML is best for linking, however, and recommended optimising page titles for SEO purposes.
