Companies have been given help on making social media work for them.
In an Econsultancy blog post, Patricio Robles warned that social media projects are often too abstract and urged businesses to make sure they had clear and specific targets in mind.
He suggested setting goals, objectives, milestones and metrics to keep such a campaign on track and noted that this could include training the marketing team and keeping track of traffic brought in from social networks.
Mr Robles explained that it is necessary to set out "tangibles and deliverables".
He also advised companies thinking of hiring a social media officer to make sure they bring in someone with real work experience.
The Wokingham Times recently called social media "the buzzword of the day in the marketing world".
It also recommended to companies that they take a "strategic" approach to the channel and highlighted the importance of listening and responding to people rather than simply having a one-way approach.
