Old content 'can spoil bespoke web design'

19th November 2009

Businesses carrying out new website creation have been warned to check that old content is not ruining their efforts.

Jill Kocher noted in a Practical Ecommerce article that "legacy content" - which is what is left after such events as the end of a promotion or the discontinuation of a product -can stay visible to search engines.

She urged firms not to let themselves lose out by failing to maximise on links generated while the content was still relevant and also warned against accidental duplication.

Another potential problem is domains that have been registered for brand protection but are then neglected or forgotten.

Ms Kocher noted that firms may register duplicate content on all the registered domains but then forget that it is there.

She advised firms to run searches to see whether any other domains were live.

Bespoke web designers may also want to look at their page loading speed after Google engineer Matt Cutts implied to WebProNews that the search engine may reward faster sites.

He told the source in an interview that quicker websites might merit a "bonus".
