Trends identified for mobile application development

18th November 2009

A research and analyst firm has listed the ten trends it says will drive mobile application development for consumers in 2012.

Gartner considered matters such as business models and consumer value when identifying the biggest fields for advancement.

Top of the list is money transfer, which would be convenient and inexpensive, though action is needed to ensure security and marketing tactics would vary from place to place.

Location-based services took the second spot due to their high value to users.

These two were followed by mobile search, browsing, health monitoring and payment.

Near field communication services, which can be used for activities such as identification and purchases, was listed seventh.

Mobile advertising, instant messaging and music completed the list.

Gartner's research director Sandy Shen predicted that people would use five mobile applications at the most at any one time.

The firm has also said that next year, enterprise software spending in the Asia Pacific region will increase by 10.2 per cent.
