Copy on websites needs to be written to appeal to people and not only to game search engines, an expert has said.
In an article for the Econsultancy blog, Kevin Gibbons observed that while many ecommerce enterprises produce website content for search engine optimisation (SEO) purposes, the text may not keep the attention of human readers.
He pointed out "scraped posts, barely literate articles and keyword-stuffed nonsense" that might register on Google but would not lead to people staying on the site or carrying out conversions.
Mr Gibbons stressed the need for well-written text that embodies quality content and provides readers with information, advice and analysis that is valuable to them.
While products may be advertised, they should appear alongside other useful information so that the user is not simply receiving a sales pitch.
A similar message was recently given by Margaret Manning in an article for TechRadar UK.
While she acknowledged the importance of making a website visible through SEO and "machine readable" content, she also note that to be successful, a website has to be relevant to the people it is trying to attract.
