A search engine optimisation (SEO) strategy should have at least six months of commitment, a professional has warned.
Patricio Robles used an Econsultancy blog post to outline some "inconvenient truths" about SEO tactics.
While acknowledging the natural desire for fast results, he said that SEO needs six months or more to get proper returns.
He also explained that not every business can top the search engine results page (SERP) and while the basic principles of SEO can be learned, some people are naturally more skilled at it and get better rankings.
Mr Robles stressed the need for other tactics as well as SEO.
While it can account for more than half of an ecommerce's investments, he noted that offline marketing, display and email are other examples of promotional techniques that need to be considered.
Stephan Spencer recently wrote a Search Engine Land blog post in which he suggested replicating a search engine's algorithm to help assess the effectiveness of a website's SEO.
