Over 25 per cent of online display ads in the UK are now from social networking sites, according to new data.
Figures released by comScore show that in August, 13.8 billion display adverts were from social networking websites.
This equates to more than a quarter of all the ones seen on the internet.
Mike Read, managing director of comScore Europe commented: "Brand advertisers who ignore this channel may be missing a significant opportunity and enabling their competitors to gain a dominant share of voice in the channel."
The research body found that telecommunication brands were the biggest advertisers for the UK on social networks, having created over 949 million of them in the month.
A study by Webtrends has found that while most people under the age of 35 do not mind brands making contact via social media, half would stop using a site if it became excessive.
Some 39 per cent of respondents thought social media contains too much advertising, New Media Age reported.
