Conversational tone 'good for ecommerce copy'

27th October 2009

Copywriters for ecommerce websites have been urged to adopt a conversational style in their writing.

ZippyCart said that being "personable" in website copy will help to engage customers better than a more stiff and formal tone.

"It is via a medium that is much more casual than a brick and mortar storefront," the writers pointed out.

While it is important not to sound "sloppy" or make too much use of slang terms, the copy should not be too dry.

ZippyCart also stressed the need for content to be easy to read and directly to the point, avoiding unnecessary verbosity and complication.

The only technical writing should be for matters such as the legal information and product data.

Longer sentences, however, may help with search engine optimisation.

Recently, Stuck On author Matt explained that a sentence with more words in it makes it easier for search engines to gauge relevance as they have more data to look at.
